Clinical Services

The clinical arm of the Department of Dermatology is responsible for providing clinical services at SVHM. The clinical team is made up of seven consultant dermatologists, two training fellows, a number of visiting trainees, nursing and support staff.

An easily accessible and efficient specialist service, covering consultative, investigational and procedural dermatology is provided to patients and those referred from other hospitals and clinics. A close liaison continues with the affiliated Skin and Cancer Foundation of Victoria and Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute.

The majority of dermatology clinical services occur in an ambulatory setting with clinics held four times weekly. The Department also provides inpatient services to patients who are admitted with severe skin disease and on a consultative basis to patients under the care of other units.

In addition to the substantial activity that occurs in general dermatology, a number of specialty clinics are also offered. Referrals to these clinics are sourced from around Victoria and from neighbouring States. They include:

*

A Cutaneous Lymphoma Clinic

*
A Photobiology Clinic
*
A Vascular and Wound Healing Service
*

An Immunodermatology Service

Teaching

The Department is active in the development, delivery and assessment of education programs directed at all those people who are likely to be involved in the provision of care to patients with skin disease in Australia. These include undergraduate medical students, general practitioners, dermatology registrars, consultant dermatologists, pharmacists and nurses.

We also develop, deliver and assess education programs on common skin diseases for primary and secondary schools and the Maternal and Child Health nursing system.

In addition we have made resources available to the media and general public to enhance the communities understanding of skin disease.

Research

The Department supports a diverse range of research activities. The Research team reflects this diversity with qualifications and experience in dermatology, epidemiology, health information management, social research, quality performance measurement, health promotion and education, data management and project management, hair and nail diseases, photosensitive diseases and photobiology and clinical therapeutic trials of new drugs.
